Ted Cruz

The Weekly Standard has recently handicapped the GOP race in Texas to replace retiring Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson and thinks Ted Cruz has a good chance of winning.

Cruz, the former Solicitor General of Texas is running against GOP candidate David Dewhurst, currently the lieutenant governor of Texas.

The Standard sees Dewhurst as desperate and seeking to attack Cruz over a legal case his law firm has on behalf of a Chinese company. Dewhurst is trying to insinuate that Cruz is somehow a pro-Chinese Communist.

According to the Standard:

“A U.S. Senate with Ted Cruz (and Josh Mandel of Ohio) joining Marco Rubio and Kelly Ayotte, to mention only two members of the GOP class of 2010, will be a much improved Senate. A Senate with David Dewhurst will be more of the same.

“So after Indiana, for the next three weeks, conservative eyes will be on Texas.”

The GOP primary takes place on May 29. If no candidate gets more than 50%, there will be a runoff, which could mean real trouble for Dewhurst.
