By William J Murray, Chairman, Government Is Not God – PAC

As chairman of Government Is Not God – PAC (GING-PAC) I have worked against a good number of economic and social liberals as well as RINO candidates for federal office. The PAC I chair has backed true conservatives in federal elections for nearly 20 years. Congressman Steve Stockman was one of the first five candidates for Congress endorsed by GING-PAC when he first ran for office in 1996. However, GING-PAC will not be endorsing Stockman’s run for the seat of Senator John Cornyn who has a lifetime National Journal voting record of 93.8 conservative —  which is well above that scored by Jim DeMint in his last year in the Senate.

The pool of conservative dollars is not unlimited. A finite number of dollars will be spent in Senate races in 2014, and the pie will not grow because of the presence of Steve Stockman in a Senate race. Most of the conservative dollars that will flow to Stockman’s campaign will come from outside of Texas, dollars that will be diverted from capturing seats such as that held by the foul mouthed former comedian Al Franken, who actually votes to the left of Joe Biden’s Senate record. The cost of a GOP primary in Texas, which is a high media cost state, will far exceed the funds needed to defeat the likes of radical Senators Al Franken in Minnesota and Tom Udall in New Mexico, combined.

Steve Stockman is a social and economic conservative, of that there is no doubt. GING-PAC endorsed him in the primary and general election of 2012. His current district is solidly Republican, his reelection for several terms assured. Using this base Stockman could have moved up the ladder in leadership perhaps as far as a chairmanship, taking with him his conservative philosophy and influence. Rather than lead in the House, Steve Stockman has chosen to abandon a seat he has held for little over a year and repeat his 1996 performance as a one term wonder. There is a phrase for what Steve has done; it is “What a waste.” A waste of the time and money donors put into his 2012 race, and of those who are investing in him now to replace 92% ACU rated Senator John Cornyn.

Steve Stockman, who has only served one full term back in the 1990’s, does have a life time rating of 100% from the ACU. But that rating comes because he has not held office long enough to be in situations where he is forced to vote to advance one conservative concept at the cost of another. His record is not long enough to compare with Senator Cornyn’s and the tough decisions he has had to make over many years.

Steve simply does not seem to understand the reality that in politics power is everything. In Congress your party either directs the agenda or watches the other party direct the agenda. Keeping your party in power is sometimes more important than a single vote on a single bill. Living to fight again is actually sometimes more prudent than dying on your own sword and allowing the enemy to take all the ground forever.

Finally, Steve Stockman is no Ted Cruz. Senator Cruz was uniquely fitted to win the Senate seat as an “outsider” in 2012. He brought with him qualities and experience that Steve just does not have. The election of Ted Cruz cannot be duplicated by Steve Stockman. He does not bring the excitement and the evangelistic fervor to the race that Cruz embodied.

I do consider Steve Stockman the consummate conservative; however, his abilities and credentials do not warrant the expenditure of tens of millions of dollars to unseat a fellow conservative, Senator John Cornyn, who is 100% pro-life and stands with pro-family traditional values and the concept of economic freedoms. In addition, Senator Cornyn has a proven ability to assist others running for Senate seats such as those held by Franken and Udall, whereas Steve Stockman enters this Senate race with an election  committee deeply in debt from his 2012 campaign.

Senator John Cornyn is an asset to Texas, the Republican Party and the conservative movement, whereas Steve Stockman has abruptly moved from being a rising star to being an impediment to conservatives gaining control of the Senate in the upcoming election.

For the reasons stated, Government Is Not God – PAC has endorsed and contributed to the re-election of Senator John Cornyn.

My message to other conservatives should be clear. Use your dollars to beat the radical leftist incumbents in the Senate this year, and not in a misguided charge into the valley of death of political purism to purge those who are “only” 99% on their side.
